Testimonials - famous fishing

Kingennie Fishings, the Tayside fishing estate which is home to some of Scotland’s most famous trout and coarse fishing waters, will play host to two of fly fishing’s leading experts on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 May 2004.

Demonstrations by Klaus Frimor and Dave Downie are part of a range of events taking place to mark the opening of a new £1.5M extension to Kingennie fishings, which is being relaunched under the name Forbes of Kingennie

The extended site at Forbes of Kingennie has seen the development of a brand new country house with restaurant, angling equipment and gift shop, bar and function suite and five new luxury self-catering lodges. A total of 10 four star lodges will nestle in the picturesque woodland around the estates’ well stocked pools when the work is complete, making Forbes of Kingennie one of the top destinations for angling and family self-catering holidays in Scotland.

The Centrepiece of the Waterside Café in the Country House will be a £35000, three-pool freshwater aquarium which has been shipped from Colorado aquarium specialist, Aquatic Exhibit Group. The 11000 litre aquarium features specialist rock work and a Scots Pine tree and will hold around eight different species of trout along with carp, roach and bream. The fish, which will range from 1 to 5 kilos and will vary from week to week, represent the kind of species found in the estate’s actual fishing ponds and should be a source of information and enjoyment to children and budding fishermen.

Mike Forbes, owner of Forbes of Kingennie with wife Gail said “the Country House and holiday estate have been developed on the back of the immense popularity of Kingennie Fishings and will provide excellent facilities for families, fishing parties or day trippers. Our emphasis is heavily on exceptional fishing and family friendly relaxing holidays and we hope to be able to attract more people to the pleasures of angling and country life through the new development.”

Klaus Frimor, loop fly fishing demonstrator and experienced guide, will be demonstrating double handed salmon casting and single handed trout casting at the opening weekend, which will be of benefit to experienced anglers and beginners alike. There will also be the opportunity to test your skills against Klaus by challenging him to a target casting competition.

Also present will be Dave Downie who is a current Scotland fly fishing team member and was the first Scottish trout master competition winner and inventor of the ‘Humungus’ fly. Dave will be giving fly tying demonstrations using material that will be stocked within the country house.

Finally, Greys of Alnwick, the main supplier of the angling equipment available in the Forbes of Kingennie shop, will be represented by Andrew Sowerby, who will be on hand to supply advice and demonstrations on rods and tackle.

“We are very proud to have such prestigous anglers coming to Forbes of Kingennie to mark the opening of the new development and are very grateful to all our loyal angling visitors who have made Kingennie Fishings such a success over the years”, continues Mike Forbes. “We very much hope that they will be impressed with the new facilities at Forbes of Kngennie and will continue to enjoy their time with us”.

Forbes of Kngennie hosted the Scottish National Coarse Fishing Championships in 2003 and attracts around 10000 anglers each year. Fishing lessons for adults and children will now be offered at the complex to increase the appeal of angling for families as well as continuing to cater for existing angling visitors.

The profile of angling in Scotland recently received a boost from the Scottish Executive and tourism agency, VisitScotland. A recent report form these bodies found that angling is a significant contributor to the Scottish economy, both from the point of view of tourism and job creation, and is now worth more to the tourism industry than golf. The Scottish Executive is now keen for angling to be developed further as a tourism activity in Scotland. The Forbes of Kingennie development aims to show off the best of angling in Scotland and make it accessible to a broader cross-section of visitors.
